MEET REED
As a former boat captain, Reed loves the water. He also loves sports, reading, playing the guitar, partying, and women. Having a hemorrhagic stroke nearly seven years ago has not changed his love of these things, but has left him frustrated at his inability to do some of them. He calls them his “challenges” now – reading, speaking, playing the guitar. He is making progress on all fronts, he reports. And he is calmer. “That’s a big accomplishment,” he says.
Meeting people and socializing a bit more are some of his goals as he attends RMSC programs. Meeting up with old friends gives him pleasure, although it does not happen often enough. He especially enjoys Dr. Bill’s Men’s Group which helps stroke survivors and their families stay focused on their accomplishments. Reed also drives now, giving him more ways to reclaim his independence.
Reed is honest when he says that he does not have big expectations regarding improvements, implying that he will be content with the small things that come his way. Of stroke, he notes that it changes life in so many ways. “It is hard to even explain it.”
